About the Lake Gogebic

Lake Gogebic is the largest inland lake in Michigan Upper Peninsula, a long narrow water in the western UP surrounded by state forest and very little else. It is remote enough that getting there is part of the trip, and quiet enough that the fishing feels like a different era.

Walleye are the reason people come. Gogebic has a long-standing reputation as one of the best walleye lakes in the state, fished on the rock and gravel bars, along the weed edges and over the mud flats depending on the month. The lake produces good numbers and respectable size, and it fishes well both in open water and through the ice.

Northern pike are abundant in the weedy bays and grow large. Smallmouth bass on the rock are excellent and lightly pressured. Yellow perch, crappie and bluegill provide the everyday fishing and are a large part of why families come back year after year.

Winter is a serious season here. The lake locks up early and hard, the ice fishing for walleye and perch is very good, and the shanty communities that appear on it are part of the local rhythm rather than an event.

The lake runs roughly fourteen miles north to south and is comparatively narrow, which means the wind has a long fetch down its length and very little across it. Choosing which shoreline to fish by wind direction is the practical skill here, and it matters more than any particular lure.

The gauge below reports lake elevation and water temperature. The temperature reading is genuinely useful this far north, where the difference of a week either side of ice-out changes the fishing completely and the calendar is a poor guide.

State forest surrounds most of the shoreline.

Seasons

Winter: hard water early and long, with excellent walleye and perch fishing.
Spring: walleye on the gravel after ice-out and pike in the shallow bays.
Summer: weed edges and rock bars, comfortable weather and very few crowds.
Fall: the best walleye of the open-water season as the water cools.
