About the Homme Reservoir
Homme Reservoir is a modest Corps of Engineers impoundment on the South Branch of the Park River, tucked into a wooded coulee just west of the city of Park River in Walsh County. It was built for flood control and water supply rather than recreation, and at a few hundred acres it is small by reservoir standards. What makes it worth knowing is its setting and its scarcity value: in the flat open country of the northeast corner of North Dakota, a sheltered, tree-lined reservoir holding walleye is not a common thing.
The gauge reads reservoir elevation together with stage, and on a water this size the elevation number tells you most of what you need. Prairie reservoirs in this region swing hard with spring runoff and summer drought, and the level determines whether the ramp is usable and how much of the shoreline timber is in the water. Spring snowmelt off the Pembina Escarpment can fill it quickly, while a dry late summer pulls it down and warms it through.
Walleye are the main target and are managed and stocked as such, with northern pike the other consistent predator and a fish that does well in the reservoir’s weedy margins. Yellow perch and crappie are the mainstay panfish and are the reason most of the ice houses appear in winter. Bluegill, bullhead and channel catfish fill in, and the river above and below the dam holds pike and catfish for anglers who prefer moving water.
Access is simple and pleasant. Homme Dam Recreation Area sits on the reservoir with a campground, ramp and day use facilities, and the city of Park River is minutes east. It suits a family trip or a half day rather than a serious expedition, and it pairs well with the larger waters of the Red River valley nearby.

The photo at the top of this page is not Homme Reservoir.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
