About the Pipestem Creek

Pipestem Creek runs south through the North Dakota drift prairie to Pipestem Reservoir and then to the James River at Jamestown, and it is an honest example of a northern plains creek rather than a destination fishery. The landscape is glacial till dotted with prairie potholes, and the creek is the thread connecting them. Gradient is slight, the channel is narrow and often willow-choked, and the bottom is silt and sand with very little hard structure. For much of the year it carries little water at all.

The fishing here is concentrated rather than continuous, and being straightforward about that is more useful than overselling it. Most of the annual flow passes in a few weeks of spring snowmelt, and that pulse is the event worth planning for: northern pike run up out of Pipestem Reservoir into the flooded creek margins and the adjacent wetlands to spawn, and for a short window they are accessible in surprisingly shallow water. Walleye and white bass follow the same route in smaller numbers. Once the pulse passes and the creek drops back, the reach above the reservoir becomes a series of quiet pools holding perch, bullhead, carp and the occasional pike that stayed.

The gauge near Buchanan reports discharge, stage and water-surface elevation, which makes the snowmelt window easy to watch from a distance – the rise is dramatic and unmistakable. The reservoir below is a Corps flood-control project and holds the more dependable year-round fishery, with pike, walleye, perch and crappie, so most anglers fish the lake and treat the creek as a spring opportunity. Access is by county road crossings and the reservoir’s own recreation areas; the surrounding land is largely private farm and ranch ground.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Pipestem Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
