About the Lehman Creek

Lehman Creek drains east off Wheeler Peak through the heart of Great Basin National Park, in the South Snake Range of White Pine County, and reaches the valley floor near the village of Baker. It is a small, steep, brushy stream rather than a destination river, and the appeal is not size but the combination of genuinely wild fish, high country scenery and access that requires almost no walking.

Park service surveys describe high densities of brook and brown trout with a few rainbow trout mixed in. The distribution follows the gradient in the way it usually does on this kind of water: brook trout dominate the upper reaches near the higher campground, and brown trout take over lower down as the creek loses elevation and warms. Native Bonneville cutthroat have been reintroduced within the park, but that work was done on Snake Creek, a separate drainage, and not here.

The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive parallels the creek for much of its length, which makes this one of the easiest wild trout streams in Nevada to reach. Upper and Lower Lehman Creek campgrounds both sit on the water, and the Lehman Caves Visitor Center is the obvious first stop for current conditions and for the park’s own regulations. A Nevada fishing licence is required, and Lehman Creek itself falls under general state rules rather than the special restrictions that apply to some park waters.

Two practical points are worth knowing. The fishing is short rod work with small dry flies, because the streamside brush leaves little room for a long cast, and pocket water rather than pools is where most fish sit. The other is a health advisory: mercury levels in Great Basin park streams have led to a recommended limit of roughly eight to twelve meals of Lehman Creek trout a month, which matters to anyone planning to keep fish rather than release them.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Lehman Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. 5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
