About the Mosquito Creek Lake

Mosquito Creek Lake north of Warren is shallow, fertile and flat, and it produces fish out of proportion to its reputation. It is one of Ohio best inland walleye lakes, and in most winters it is one of the busiest ice fishing destinations in the state, with a whole culture of shanty towns and holes drilled over the same flats year after year.

The walleye fishing is a drifting and trolling game across broad shallow flats rather than a structure hunt. Because the lake is shallow the fish are rarely deep, and wind-driven mud lines are often more important than any contour on a map. Crappie fishing is excellent and heavily pursued, northern pike lurk in the weedy northern end, and there are good numbers of largemouth, bluegill and yellow perch.

The northern third of the lake sits inside a state wildlife area and is subject to seasonal restrictions that protect nesting waterfowl, so it is worth reading the current rules before planning to fish up there in spring. The southern end near the dam and the causeway is where most of the boat traffic concentrates.

Ice is a real part of the calendar here rather than a novelty. In a normal winter the lake locks up early and holds, and the walleye and crappie fishing through the ice is as good as anything the lake offers in open water. That also means late-season ice is a genuine hazard on a lake this shallow and wind-exposed, and local advice about where the pressure cracks form is worth taking seriously.

Mosquito is a water-supply and flood-control lake operated by the Corps, and its level is held fairly steady through the fishing season with a drawdown in late autumn. On water this shallow, even a modest change in level moves a lot of weed edge in or out of reach, which is exactly what the gauge reading below is for.

Winter: one of Ohio busiest ice fisheries, walleye, crappie and perch.

Fall: cooling water concentrates fish and the crowds thin out.
