About the Agency Lake
Agency Lake is the northern basin of the Upper Klamath Lake system, joined to the main lake by a narrow channel at its southern end and fed from the north by the Wood River and from the east by the Williamson. It is shallow even by the standards of this famously shallow basin, and in a dry year parts of it become barely navigable. What it has going for it is the same thing the main lake has: an extraordinarily productive food base that grows native Klamath redband rainbow trout to sizes found almost nowhere else in Oregon, with the added advantage that far fewer boats bother with it.
The fishing follows the same thermal logic as the main lake. Through the cool months trout are spread through the basin, and as summer arrives and the algal bloom builds, the fish concentrate near cold inflows, most importantly the Wood River delta at the north end and the spring-fed water along the western shore. Anglers work leeches, dragonfly nymphs and streamers along the weed edges and the old river channels from drift boats, prams and kayaks, and the reward is a small number of very large fish rather than a busy day. Brown trout appear occasionally, largemouth bass and yellow perch hold in the warmer shallows, and the basin’s non-game fish include the endangered suckers that drive the Klamath Basin’s water politics.
The gauge near Klamath Agency reports lake elevation and nothing else, and on a basin this shallow that is the number that decides whether a trip happens at all. A foot of elevation change moves a great deal of shoreline here, opens or closes the channel to the main lake, and determines whether the Wood River delta is reachable by boat. Read the trace and the trend rather than a single value, and pair it with the season: late spring and early summer, before the bloom takes hold, are the best weeks of the year on this basin.

The photo at the top of this page is not Agency Lake.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
