White Creek Fishing Guides

A small, cold, spring-fed trout stream in Green Lake County that runs barely three square miles of drainage yet holds wild brown trout through the summer on the strength of its groundwater alone.

About the White Creek

White Creek is a genuine spring creek, and the number that proves it is the drainage area. Barely three square miles feed the gauge at Spring Grove Road, which on an ordinary Wisconsin stream would mean a channel that runs in April and goes dry in August. This one does neither. It is fed by groundwater rising out of the sand and gravel that underlies this part of Green Lake County, so it carries a steady flow and a steady temperature through the hottest weeks of the year, and that is the whole reason trout live in it.

The character follows from the geology. Gradient is gentle, the water runs clear except after heavy rain, and the bed is a mixture of gravel, sand and marl rather than the bedrock of a freestone stream. Watercress and other aquatic plants grow thickly in the slower reaches, holding insects and giving fish cover in water that would otherwise be far too thin to hide in. The creek is narrow enough to step across in places, and the fishing is an exercise in staying low and out of sight rather than in covering distance.

Brown trout carry the fishery and a good share of them are wild rather than stocked, which is the mark of a spring creek that is working properly. Brook trout appear in the colder upper reaches. Rainbow trout are present in smaller numbers. White sucker, creek chub and blacknose dace fill out the assemblage and are worth knowing, because a creek chub taking a dry fly is a common disappointment here.

Access is from road crossings and through land that is largely private, so permission and the state easement maps both matter. Pressure is light compared with the better known Driftless waters an hour to the southwest.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not White Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. The license lasts until you withdraw it (section 4).

You keep the copyright. The license is not exclusive, so you can use the photo anywhere else and license it to anyone else. We will not sell your photo, license it on to anyone else on its own, or use it in paid advertising for a third party.

Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.

We hold that record for as long as the photo is published and for the retention period described in our privacy policy. Location data that your camera or phone embedded in the file is removed before the photo is published.

Access

Green Lake - the nearest town of size, a few minutes north, with lodging, food and fuel.
Spring Grove Road - the gauge crossing and the most straightforward place to start.
Markesan - a small town to the south with basic supplies and a second approach to the drainage.
Berlin - a larger service town to the east when tackle or a licence is needed.
Green Lake proper - the deep natural lake nearby, a complete change of fishing when the creek is off.
Fox River - the larger regional water a short drive away, holding walleye and smallmouth.
Mecan River - a better known spring influenced trout stream to the northwest, worth pairing on a two day trip.

Seasons

Spring: the creek fishes well as soon as the season opens, with trout spread through the riffles and willing before the weeds come in.
Summer: the groundwater keeps the water cold while surrounding streams warm, and this is when White Creek is worth the drive.
Fall: brown trout move onto the gravel to spawn and the fishing turns to fewer, larger, warier fish.
Winter: flow stays steady and ice is patchy, but access is difficult and most anglers leave it alone.
