About the Spring Creek

Spring Creek runs through the middle of the Nittany Valley from Boalsburg down past Lemont, Houserville, Bellefonte and Axemann to its mouth at Milesburg. It is the archetypal Pennsylvania limestoner: springs feed it steadily, the water stays cold in August and open in January, and the alkalinity supports an insect biomass that translates directly into trout. It is managed as catch-and-release, all tackle, for its entire length, and there has been no stocking for decades. Everything in it is wild, and the brown trout density through the Benner Spring and Fisherman’s Paradise reaches is among the highest measured anywhere in the eastern United States.

The fish are wild browns with a scattering of rainbows and, in the cold upper tributaries, brook trout. They are not large on average — a fourteen-inch fish is a good one and an eighteen-inch fish is a genuinely good one — but there are a great many of them and they see a great deal of pressure, which makes them educated in a way that rewards careful work. Sulphurs in May and June are the signature hatch. Blue-winged olives run from March into November, tricos cover the mornings in midsummer, and midges keep the creek fishable through the winter. Terrestrial fishing along the grassy banks in August is excellent and underused.

Access is unusually good for a limestone stream because so much of the corridor is in public or conservation hands, with the Spring Creek Canyon, Fisherman’s Paradise and the Bellefonte reaches all open and connected by trail. It is a wading and bank-fishing creek; there is no floating it. Because it runs through a developed valley, expect houses, roads and other anglers, and treat it as an urban trout stream that happens to fish like a spring creek.

The gauge near Axemann sits on the lower creek and is the standard reference. Spring Creek is spring-fed and rarely blows out, so the useful signal is usually clarity after a storm rather than raw discharge.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Spring Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. 5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
