About the Clarion River

The Clarion is one of Pennsylvania conservation stories worth knowing. For most of the twentieth century it ran badly polluted by tanneries, paper mills and acid mine drainage. Decades of treatment and remediation brought it back far enough that a long section is now federally designated wild and scenic, and the river through Cook Forest State Park is a genuinely pleasant float through old-growth hemlock and white pine.

The fishery splits by reach. The upper river around Ridgway and Johnsonburg is managed as trout water and gets stocked browns and rainbows, with cold tributaries holding wild fish. From Cooksburg downstream the river widens and warms through summer, and smallmouth bass become the dominant sport fish, with rock bass everywhere, walleye in the deeper runs and a muskellunge population that produces a handful of serious fish every year for people willing to put in the hours. Channel catfish work the bottom of the lower pools.

Float fishing is how the Clarion is best covered. Canoe and kayak liveries operate out of Cook Forest and the runs between Ridgway, Clear Creek and Cooksburg are well established, with formal launches and takeouts. Wading works around the riffles at low summer flow. Public land is abundant – Allegheny National Forest at the top, Cook Forest and Clear Creek State Parks through the middle – so access is not the problem it is on many Pennsylvania rivers.

Flows are dam-influenced at the top end and rain-driven below, and the river can still colour up quickly. Summer weekends through Cook Forest are busy with recreational paddlers, so the fishing is better early, late, or on a weekday.

You confirm that you took the photograph yourself (or otherwise own the rights to it), that you have the right to grant this license, and that publishing the photo does not infringe anyone else’s copyright, privacy or other rights.

If any person is recognisable in the photo, you confirm that they have agreed to its being published here, and that a parent or guardian has agreed on behalf of anyone under 18.
