About the Meduxnekeag River
The Meduxnekeag River runs east through southern Aroostook County and crosses into New Brunswick just below Houlton, where it joins the St. John. What sets it apart from the rivers to the north is the ground it runs over. The valley holds calcareous bedrock, and the water carries more dissolved mineral than the granite-country streams of interior Maine. That chemistry makes the river more productive than its size suggests and supports a denser insect population and better growth rates in its fish.
Smallmouth bass are the practical mainstay. They are abundant through the reaches around and below Houlton, they grow well on the river’s fertility, and they are the reason most anglers visit. Brook trout hold in the colder tributaries and in the shaded upper water, and brown trout are present in parts of the drainage. Muskellunge have moved up from the St. John system and now turn up in the lower river, which has changed how local anglers think about the water.
The gauge at Lowery Road reports water temperature alongside stage and discharge, which is unusually useful on a river of this character. Temperature is the variable that decides whether the trout water upstream is worth fishing and whether the smallmouth will be active in the flats, and having it on the same record as flow saves a lot of guesswork before a trip.
The river is small enough to wade through much of its length and big enough below Houlton to float in a canoe. The Meduxnekeag Watershed Coalition has worked on access and riparian restoration through the corridor, and there are established put-ins and trail access around town. Spring runoff is short by northern Maine standards and the river fishes well from early summer into October in most years.
