Yellowstone Country Fly Fishing

Livingston, Montana · Fishes Firehole River, Gibbon River, Lamar River, Stillwater River

Park days here are walk and wade, and May is spent on the Gibbon and the Firehole. The Firehole, which this outfitter calls the strangest trout river on earth, is reached from the Lone Star Geyser Trail near Kepler Cascades and off the Madison Junction road; it fishes best from late May to mid June and again in October, is too warm from July into early September, and carries a white miller caddis. The Gibbon drops from Grebe and Wolf lakes through Virginia Meadows, with timbered trailless water between Virginia Cascades and Norris Meadow. The Lamar begins near the crest of the Absaroka Range, fishes from early July into early October, and takes its heaviest pressure over the eight miles between Soda Butte and the canyon, on green drakes, pale morning duns, blue winged olives and midges. The Stillwater is floated in rafts, from Jeffrey’s Landing out to Itch-Kep-Pe, as a dry dropper river over golden and nocturnal stoneflies.
