About the Bayou Bonne Idee
Bayou Bonne Idee drains the flat agricultural country of Morehouse Parish and feeds into the Boeuf River system in northeast Louisiana. It is classic delta bayou water: low gradient, tea-coloured, lined with willow and cypress, and much deeper in places than its modest width suggests. The gauge east of Oak Ridge reads stage, and stage is the number that governs fishing here, because the bayou spends part of most years spilling into the surrounding woods and fields and part of it pulled back into a narrow, defined channel.
That annual cycle is the key to the fishery. When the water is up and into the trees, bass and crappie scatter into the flooded timber and are hard to pin down but easy to catch once found. When the water drops, everything funnels back into the channel and the deeper bends become genuinely crowded with fish. Anglers who pay attention to whether the bayou is rising or falling will out-fish anglers who simply show up.
Largemouth bass are the headline, and the wood cover here is as good as bass cover gets. Crappie, both white and black, are abundant and hold around submerged trees and log jams. Bluegill, redear and warmouth line the edges. The catfishery is serious, with blue and flathead catfish reaching real size in the deeper holes and channel catfish common throughout the warm months.
Bowfin are plentiful, and alligator gar are present in the lower reaches, which is worth knowing before something very large takes a bait. Access is by parish road, bridge and levee rather than developed ramp, and a shallow-draft boat or kayak is the right tool. Oak Ridge and Bastrop are the nearest towns.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
