The St. Croix is the international boundary between Maine and New Brunswick, and Weatherby’s guides fish roughly ten miles of it: the main stem below Vanceboro down to Little Falls, and the river and flowage below Grand Falls. Days run either by drift boat, which the guides prefer on the upper stretches where a canoe is harder work, or by canoe and kayak, and a drift boat carries two fishing adults. The water is thick with smallmouth bass, and in spring landlocked salmon and brook trout come into it as well. Gentle whitewater at Little Falls, Tunnel Rips and Wingdam Island breaks up the day between the fishing. Rates are quoted per guide and take in the shuttle; a canoe rental fee may be added for larger groups. The river is as well known to wilderness canoeists as to anglers, and New Brunswick lists it as a Natural Heritage River.
