About the Channel Lake
Channel Lake sits at the northern end of the Chain O’Lakes, the interconnected glacial lake system on the upper Fox River that is by some measures the busiest inland fishery in Illinois. Fifteen lakes are joined by natural and dredged channels navigable by boat, and Channel Lake is one of the northernmost, close to the Wisconsin line near Antioch. The lakes are glacial kettles rather than impoundments, which gives them irregular basins, genuine deep holes, extensive weed beds and the kind of structural variety that reservoir anglers rarely get.
The species list is long because the connected system is large. Largemouth bass are the most-targeted fish, holding on the weed edges and the wood along the developed shoreline, and northern pike use the same weed beds and reach a good size. Walleye are present and are fished seriously at night and in low light, crappie both black and white school heavily in spring and again under the ice, and bluegill and perch are abundant enough to make this genuinely good family water. Channel and flathead catfish work the deeper holes and the channel mouths where current runs between lakes.
The gauge reports stage, and on this system that number does real work. Because the lakes are connected to the Fox River, a high river pushes water into the chain, raises levels, dirties the water and can put a no-wake restriction over the whole system for days. Low stage concentrates fish but also makes some channels marginal for larger boats. The system is heavily developed and extremely busy with recreational traffic in summer, which is the honest caveat: fish early, fish late, or fish outside the summer weekends. Chain O’Lakes State Park provides the main public access.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
