What Does CFS Mean for Fishing? Flow Explained
CFS fishing basics: what cubic feet per second measures, gauge height vs. discharge, how to read a USGS gauge, and why guides watch flow percentiles.
Every guide checks the gauge before they check the weather. The number they are looking at is discharge, measured in cubic feet per second, and it says more about how the day will fish than anything else on the screen. This is a plain explanation of cfs fishing numbers: what they measure, why they mean different things on different rivers, and how guides use them.
What cubic feet per second measures
Discharge is the volume of water passing a fixed point on the river every second. One cubic foot is about 7.5 gallons, roughly a basketball. A river running 1,000 cfs moves 1,000 of those past the gauge every second. It is not speed, and it is not depth, though both rise with it. It is volume.
Discharge matters more than depth alone because it combines how much water is in the channel with how fast it is moving. A river at 500 cfs is a different river than the same channel at 5,000 cfs, even if the depth at the ramp only changed a couple of feet. The current is stronger, the fish move, and the boat handles differently.
Why the same number means different things on different rivers
1,000 cfs is a normal summer day on the Current River, a low, bony flow on the Madison, and a minimum-release trickle on the White River below Bull Shoals. The number only means something when you know what the river usually does.
Channel shape and drainage size are the reasons. A wide, shallow river spreads 1,000 cfs thin. A narrow, deep one stacks the same water into strong current. A big drainage collects far more water than a spring creek, so its normal is a bigger number. Comparing cfs on the same river against its own history is the useful exercise.
Gauge height versus discharge
A USGS gauge page usually shows two numbers: gauge height in feet and discharge in cfs. They are related but not the same.
- Gauge height is the water level relative to a fixed reference point at the gauge. It is what the sensor actually measures, and it is what flood warnings and ramp closures reference, but a stage of 4.0 feet on one river tells you nothing about 4.0 feet on another.
- Discharge is calculated from gauge height using a rating curve the USGS builds by physically measuring flow at various stages. It is the number that transfers from river to river as a concept, even if the values differ.
Locals often talk in gauge height because that is what they grew up watching. Guides who fish several rivers tend to think in cfs. If you are new to a piece of water, cfs plus the percentile is the faster way to learn it.
How to read a USGS gauge
Search the river name plus USGS and the nearest town, or use the USGS National Water Dashboard. On the gauge page you will see:
- The current reading, updated every 15 minutes to an hour, with a timestamp. Check the timestamp, since gauges go offline in floods and freezes.
- A hydrograph, the line chart of the last 7 days or so. The shape of the line matters as much as the number.
- The median line, usually a row of small triangles or a dashed line showing the daily median for that calendar day across the gauge’s period of record. This is the comparison you want.
- The percentile, on some pages or the dashboard map, which places today’s flow against every other year on this date. Below the 25th is low. Above the 75th is high. Above the 90th is usually a different river.
Number, then line, then triangles. That order answers the three questions that matter: how much water, which direction, and whether that is normal.
Rising versus falling
A river at 1,500 cfs on the way up after rain and the same river at 1,500 cfs on the way down two days later fish nothing alike. Rising water carries debris and mud, pushes fish to the banks, and spooks them. Falling, clearing water is often the best fishing of the week, because fish settle back into the lanes and feed hard.
The exception is the tailwater, where the rain is a dam. The White River can go from a few hundred cfs to well over 20,000 cfs in an hour when the generators come on, and drop just as fast when they shut off. Guides fish the schedule, not the storm.
Why guides watch the percentile
The median is the river’s baseline for this date. The percentile tells you how far off it you are. That one comparison lets a guide make a reasonable call about a river they have never floated, and tells a guide who has floated it a thousand times which version showed up today.
Roughly speaking, and every river has its own thresholds:

Three examples
Current River at Van Buren
The Current is spring-fed, so it holds a steady baseline through dry spells. At Van Buren, normal summer flow sits somewhere around 800 to 1,200 cfs, and the river is clear, cold, and floatable at that level. A big Ozark rain can push it past 5,000 cfs in a day and turn it the color of coffee. Major floods run into the tens of thousands of cfs. The same river that fishes well at 1,000 is dangerous at 10,000.
Madison River runoff
The Madison in Montana swells with snowmelt. In May and June, flows on the lower river can double or triple over the winter baseline, and tributaries dump mud into the main stem. Many guides move to other water during runoff. When the hydrograph rolls over and starts to fall in late June or July, the famous dry fly fishing starts. White River tailwater generation
Below Bull Shoals Dam, the White River flow is whatever the dam operators release. With no generation, the river runs at a minimum flow that wades easily. With all units running, it is a wide, fast, deep river that only fishes from a boat. Guides check the generation schedule, which is published a day ahead and changes without notice, and plan the day around it. A morning of no generation and an afternoon of full generation means wading early and drifting late.
Safety
High water hurts people every year. Strainers, the downed trees the current pushes you into, are the most common hazard on Ozark rivers, and a flood puts them everywhere. Cold water and fast current make swims short and dangerous. A few rules guides follow:
- If the flow is above the 90th percentile and rising, the trip moves to a different river or a different day.
- Wear the life jacket whenever the guide tells you to, and on any recreational float in high water.
- Never float a stretch you have not seen at that flow. Ask a local outfitter what the river is doing.
- Check the gauge the morning of the trip, not just the forecast.
A guide who cancels because of flow is doing their job. It costs them a day of income and saves you a bad day at best and a swim at worst.
