About the Choccolocco Creek

Choccolocco Creek drains the western flank of the Talladega range, gathers the water off Alabama’s highest ground, and runs southwest past Anniston and Lincoln to Logan Martin Lake on the Coosa River. The gauge sits at Jackson Shoal, which tells you something useful about the character of the creek: this is shoal water, with real gravel and bedrock ledges, not the sand-bottomed coastal-plain channel that much of Alabama offers. The drainage of nearly five hundred square miles gives it the volume to stay fishable when smaller mountain creeks nearby have gone to a trickle.

The gauge reports discharge and stage, and both are the readings to check before committing to a float. The upper watershed is steep and the creek rises sharply after rain on the mountains, carrying colour for a day or two before settling. Summer brings low clear water over the shoals, easy wading and the most pleasant conditions for anglers, though paddlers will drag through the shallowest ledges. The lower reach near Logan Martin is influenced by the reservoir and holds water regardless, which is where the larger fish tend to be found in the driest part of the year.

The Coosa system is one of the most biologically rich river basins in North America and this creek reflects that. Redeye bass, the Coosa-drainage native that Alabama anglers prize, hold in the shoal water and the smaller pools. Spotted and largemouth bass take the deeper and slower stretches, with the largemouth growing well near the reservoir. Bluegill, redear and longear sunfish are everywhere, channel catfish work the holes, and flathead catfish reach size in the lower creek. Public access comes from county roads, bridges and the reservoir’s facilities.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Choccolocco Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for.
