About the West Branch Brandywine Creek

The West Branch of the Brandywine rises in the rolling farmland around Honey Brook and runs south through Chester County to meet the East Branch and form the main Brandywine. At the gauge it drains fewer than nineteen square miles, which makes it genuinely small water, but the geology it rises in is limestone and the creek shows it: a steady baseflow, water that stays cool later into the summer than a stream this size has any right to, and the kind of fertility that produces heavy insect hatches and fast-growing trout. It is a working-farm landscape rather than a wilderness one, and the creek threads hedgerows, pasture and the occasional woodlot.

Fishing it is close-quarters work. The casting lanes are short, the banks are often brushy, and an angler who can roll-cast under a hedgerow will outfish one with a beautiful long line. Brown trout are the quarry, a mix of stocked fish and wild ones holding in the spring-influenced reaches, and the state adds rainbows and a few brook trout in the spring. Below the trout water the creek warms and smallmouth bass, rock bass and redbreast sunfish take over, which gives anglers a second fishery in the same morning if they are prepared to walk downstream. White suckers and creek chubs are abundant and are a good sign rather than a bad one here, because they point to the same fertility the trout are living on.

The gauge reports discharge and stage but not temperature, so summer thermal risk has to be inferred. On a creek this small that inference is straightforward and important: a West Branch holding flow through July is one whose limestone springs are still contributing, and a sharp recession to the bottom of the record means the trout have crowded into a handful of cool pockets and are better left alone. Spring is the real season, autumn is the quiet one, and the summer fishing belongs to the first hour of light.

The photo at the top of this page is not West Branch Brandywine Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
