About the North Fork of the White River
The North Fork of the White River is the wild trout river of the Missouri Ozarks. It flows south from Texas County through Ozark County to Norfork Lake, picking up Rainbow Spring and Double Spring above Dawt Mill, and it holds self-sustaining rainbows along with browns that grow to sizes most Missouri anglers only see in photos. Unlike the Current and the Meramec, the trout here did not come from a truck last month.
The upper river from Topaz down to Hebron and Twin Bridges is smallmouth water, small and intimate and a good canoe float in spring. The trout water begins in earnest between Hammond Camp and Blair Bridge and continues through Patrick Bridge and Dawt Mill to the lake. Blair Bridge to Patrick Bridge, and Patrick Bridge to Dawt, are the two guided floats most outfitters run, each a full day in a drift boat or raft with plenty of long gravel runs to wade.
The Tecumseh gauge reads near the mouth and includes all the spring flow, so it runs higher than the trout reach. Around 400 to 800 cfs at Tecumseh is a good floating level; below 300 the river gets low and clear and the browns get wary; above 1,500 the river is high and best left to the guides who know it. The 2017 flood rearranged this river dramatically, and gravel bars, root wads, and even some access points are still not where older maps say they are.
Rockbridge, Dora, and Dawt are the nearest supply points. Lodging is limited to a few cabins and outfitters, so book both the guide and the bed early for spring and fall.

Topaz and Hebron: upper river canoe accesses in smallmouth water.
Twin Bridges (Highway 14): concrete ramp, campground, canoe rental, start of the lower river.
Hammond Camp: county access between Twin Bridges and Blair Bridge.
Blair Bridge (Highway H): MDC access and ramp at the top of the best trout water.
Patrick Bridge (Highway PP): MDC access below Rainbow Spring, 6 miles below Blair Bridge.
Dawt Mill: private resort access with a ramp, the usual takeout for drift boats; Tecumseh Access sits at the lake.
Seasons
March through May: the best big brown trout months, highest flows, streamer fishing from a boat.
June: caddis and stonefly activity, warm days, still good flow.
July through August: warm and busy on weekends but the springs keep the lower river fishable; go early.
October and November: spawning browns, low clear water, the river at its prettiest; winter fishing is open and quiet.
