Fisheads of the San Juan
Navajo Dam, New Mexico · Fishes San Juan River
About 20 miles of the San Juan below Navajo Dam make up the guided water, and it splits into three distinct pieces. The Quality Waters hold a reported 12,000 to 15,000 trout per mile, with fish commonly in the 20-inch range. The Quantity Waters see less pressure and are pointed toward anglers still learning. The lower river is treated as the advanced option, with brown trout, streamer work and dry fly fishing. Drift boat floats and wade trips are both run, and the river is fished 365 days a year. January into March leans on large flies and streamers. April through June mixes streamers, subsurface nymphs and some dry fly work. July and August turn to ants, hoppers, baetis and midge hatches. September through November combines subsurface fishing with dry fly activity, and late fall goes back to nymphs and streamers. Individuals, families and groups are all booked.
