Almont, Colorado · Fishes Gunnison River
Gunnison River Guides launches float trips from Almont, Colorado onto a 23-mile stretch of the upper Gunnison River running down to Blue Mesa Reservoir. The water ranges from 60 to 150 feet wide and carries rainbow, brown, cutthroat and cutbow trout through riffles, deep pools and fish-holding pockets, with fish commonly running 10 to 20 inches and some exceeding 24 inches. Guides work streamers, nymphs and dry flies to match seasonal hatches of caddis, golden stoneflies, green drakes, PMDs, BWOs and hoppers. Trips go out as half-day or full-day floats from a driftboat or a fully rigged raft, and the same water is also fished on foot as a walk-and-wade outing for anglers who prefer to work the bank and wadeable riffles rather than fish from a boat.
