About the Quinebaug River

The Quinebaug runs about sixty-nine miles from Massachusetts through eastern Connecticut to the Shetucket at Norwich, and the USGS gauge at Jewett City watches roughly seven hundred and thirteen square miles near the bottom of that run. It reports discharge and stage without a temperature series. This is the largest river in the Quinebaug-Shetucket corridor, and it has been worked hard: the valley was a textile centre, and the river still carries the dams, canals and mill impoundments that came with it.

That industrial history splits the river into distinct fisheries. The upper reaches around Putnam and above hold Connecticut’s Quinebaug River Trout Management Area, a managed stretch that draws fly anglers for stocked and holdover brown and rainbow trout under special regulations. Downstream, below the larger impoundments and through the Jewett City reach the gauge sits on, the character changes to a warmwater river. Smallmouth bass are the main draw there, with largemouth in the slower impounded water, northern pike in the weedier flats, and yellow perch, black crappie and channel catfish throughout.

Flow on the lower river is influenced by upstream dam operation as well as by rainfall, so the hydrograph does not always read like a natural freestone. Anglers planning a float or a wade below Jewett City generally check the gauge for the difference between a normal summer baseflow and a release or storm rise, because the river changes character quickly between the two. The Quinebaug is canoeable in long sections, with portages around the dams, and the paddling and fishing communities overlap.

The river is also a restoration story in progress. Fish passage work and dam removal in the Thames basin have been aimed at returning migratory species to the Quinebaug and Shetucket, and Connecticut’s regulations for the trout management area and for the river generally are worth reading before a trip, because they differ by reach.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Quinebaug River.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
