About the West Branch Farmington River

The West Branch of the Farmington is the best trout river in southern New England and it owes that status to a dam. Cold water is drawn from depth in the Hogback reservoir system above Riverton and released downstream, which keeps the river in the fifties through July and August when every freestone in the region has gone warm and lifeless. Worth stating plainly: the gauge at Riverton sits on that regulated reach, so what it reads is release-driven, not rainfall-driven, and the river behaves accordingly.

The result is a genuine year-round fishery. Wild brown trout reproduce here and make up a meaningful share of the population, supplemented by heavy stocking including surplus Atlantic salmon broodstock that turn up as an occasional very large surprise. Rainbows are present throughout and brook trout occupy the colder tributaries. Hatches are excellent and well documented – Hendricksons, caddis, sulphurs, tricos and a long autumn of blue-winged olives – and the river supports dry-fly fishing when nothing else in the state will.

Management is layered and the rules matter. There is a permanent trout management area, a catch-and-release section, and a trophy stretch, each with its own regulations and boundaries. Read the current book before you fish rather than after. Access is excellent: Route 181 and River Road follow the water, Peoples State Forest and American Legion State Forest provide large public blocks, and parking areas are marked along the length.

The trade-off for reliability is company. This river gets fished hard, especially in the catch-and-release water on weekends. Weekday mornings and the winter months are when it feels like a trout river rather than a queue.
