About the Lake Minnehaha

Lake Minnehaha is one of the larger lakes on the Clermont Chain, a connected string of eleven waters in the rolling sand-hill country of Lake County southwest of Orlando. Unlike much of central Florida’s lake district, the Clermont Chain sits on sand rather than muck, and the water runs noticeably clearer as a result. Canals link Minnehaha to Louisa, Susan, Palatlakaha and the rest of the chain, so a boat launched here can reach a great deal of water without a trailer.

Largemouth bass are the reason the chain has a reputation, and it is genuine trophy water. The Florida-strain fish here grow large on a diet of shiners and shad, and the classic winter and early spring approach – wild shiners fished around the outside grass lines and the deeper eelgrass edges – still produces the biggest fish of the year. Artificial anglers work the hydrilla and eelgrass with swimbaits, flukes and topwater early. Black crappie fishing through the cold months is excellent and heavily pursued locally, and the bream and shellcracker beds in late spring draw their own following. Orlando-based guides run the chain constantly, which makes it one of the most accessible trophy bass fisheries in the country.

The gauge at Clermont publishes lake elevation. On a connected chain this number matters more than it looks: the canals between lakes get skinny at low pool and a foot of difference decides whether a bass boat can move between waters or has to stay put. Watch it before planning a multi-lake day. No water temperature is published at this station, so seasonal timing comes from the boat’s own readings. The chain sits inside a busy recreational corridor and summer weekends bring heavy boat traffic, so guided trips here almost always start at first light and are off the water by mid-morning.
