About the Clear Lake
Clear Lake is a natural glacial lake of roughly 3,600 acres in Cerro Gordo County, north central Iowa, and it is one of the most heavily used recreational waters in the state. It is shallow — averaging around ten feet with a maximum near twenty in the deeper east basin — and that shallowness made it vulnerable to sediment loading and algal blooms for decades. A sustained restoration effort involving dredging, watershed work and shoreline stabilization has improved clarity substantially. The USGS gauge at Clear Lake reads lake stage.
The fishery is managed intensively. Walleye are stocked and supported by natural reproduction on the gravel and rubble shoreline, and they are the primary target for most anglers, taken along the rock rip-rap, the weed edges and the dredge cuts. Yellow perch are abundant and reach good size, and the perch fishing here has a strong regional following. Muskellunge have been stocked for years and the lake produces genuine trophy fish, which is unusual for Iowa.
Panfish carry a large share of the effort. Black and white crappie stack around the docks, brush and the deeper cuts, and bluegill fishing is dependable through the summer. Largemouth bass hold in the vegetation on the west end and around the extensive dock lines, white bass school in open water chasing shad, and channel catfish are abundant and easy to target from shore.
Access is excellent and the shoreline is developed, with a state park, city parks and multiple public ramps. That development means boat traffic is heavy on summer weekends and most serious fishing happens early, late or on weekdays. Winter ice fishing is popular and well attended, with perch and crappie the main quarry. The lake fishes small enough that a modest boat or even shore access covers plenty of good water.

Seasons
Spring: walleye move to the rock and rip-rap right after ice-out and through the April and May spawn, with crappie following into the shallow bays as water warms.
Summer: walleye shift to weed edges and dredge cuts; bluegill and bass fishing is steady, and heavy boat traffic pushes the best fishing to early and late.
Fall: an excellent second season. Walleye and perch return to the rock and weed edges through October, and muskellunge fishing peaks into November.
Winter: a strong ice fishery from late December into February for yellow perch, crappie and walleye, with easy access from the state park and city shoreline.
