About the Fox Lake
Fox Lake is the largest single body of water in the Chain O’Lakes, the interconnected system of glacial lakes on the Fox River in Lake County, close to the Wisconsin border. The Chain is one of the busiest inland boating destinations in the Midwest, and Fox Lake sits at the heart of it, which shapes the fishing as much as the biology does.
The gauge reports stage, and on the Chain stage is genuinely consequential. The system is shallow and connected to the Fox River, so spring rain and snowmelt raise the whole Chain quickly. When levels rise above set thresholds, no-wake restrictions come into force across the Chain, and at high water they can stay in place for weeks. For an angler this cuts both ways: it makes running between lakes slow, but it also clears the recreational traffic off the water and turns a hectic system into a quiet one.
The fishery is a classic shallow, fertile, mixed-species Midwestern one. Largemouth bass are widespread in the weed edges and around the piers that line much of the shoreline. Walleye are present and fished seriously, particularly on the wind-blown flats and in the connecting channels. Northern pike are abundant, muskellunge are stocked and taken with some regularity, and crappie, bluegill and yellow perch make up a strong panfish component that carries the winter ice fishery. Channel and flathead catfish are common in the deeper holes and the river channel.
Access is excellent, with numerous public and private ramps around the Chain and a state park nearby. Weekend summer traffic is heavy, so early mornings and the shoulder seasons are the sensible times to fish. Illinois regulations apply, with specific rules for the Chain O’Lakes and Fox River, so check the current book.

The photo at the top of this page is not Fox Lake.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
