About the Kishwaukee River

The Kishwaukee has a strong claim to being the finest smallmouth stream in Illinois, and among anglers in the northern part of the state that claim is not really disputed. It is a modest river by Midwestern standards, running roughly seventy miles out of McHenry and Boone counties before joining the Rock River south of Rockford, but it has the two things a smallmouth river needs and most Illinois rivers lack: a clean gravel and cobble bottom, and enough gradient to keep riffles working through the summer. The result is water that looks more like a driftless-area stream than a corn-belt river, with visible structure, moving water and fish that behave accordingly.

Smallmouth are the reason to be here. They hold on the rock, in the riffle tailouts and against the wood on the outside bends, and the river fishes well from a canoe or kayak through most of the season and by wading in low summer water. Rock bass are everywhere and will keep a beginner busy. Channel and flathead catfish use the deeper holes and reach real size in the lower reaches. Northern pike hold in the slower backwaters, walleye run up out of the Rock in spring, and the usual panfish fill in around the edges. The Kishwaukee also carries an unusually intact native mussel and fish community, which is worth knowing because it is the reason parts of the corridor are protected.

The gauge near Perryville reads discharge and stage with no temperature sensor. That discharge figure is the whole planning tool on this river. It is a flashy stream that rises quickly after rain and clears just as fast, so a spike means wait a day or two rather than cancel. Low late-summer flows turn it into a wading river.
