About the Mississinewa Lake
Mississinewa Lake is one of a trio of Corps flood-control reservoirs in north central Indiana, built on the Mississinewa River to protect the Wabash valley downstream. It is a working flood-control lake first, and the size of its seasonal level change is the defining fact about fishing it.
Walleye are stocked and are the main draw, fished in the spring near the upper end and the feeder creeks and trolled over the flats through summer. What surprises visitors is the smallmouth bass fishing: the lake has enough rock, riprap and gravel to support them properly, and they are largely overlooked by anglers focused on walleye and crappie.
Largemouth use the wood and the shallow arms, crappie fishing around brush is reliable, and both channel and flathead catfish grow well in the fertile water. The bluegill fishing in early summer is good and easy to reach from the bank.
The drawdown here is dramatic. Between summer pool and the winter level the lake changes size substantially, ramps go out of service, and cover that held fish in July is dry ground in December. Anglers who only visit in one season are often startled by the other.
Mississinewa is one of three Corps lakes on this river system, with Salamonie and Huntington nearby, and all three run the same aggressive drawdown. Anglers in the area tend to treat them as one fishery with three addresses, moving to whichever is holding the most water and the clearest conditions in a given week.
