About the Wildcat Creek

Wildcat Creek is the stream that persuades visiting anglers that Indiana has moving water worth travelling for. It drains close to eight hundred square miles of the central till plain, running west from the Kokomo area through Carroll County to the Wabash River just east of Lafayette, and by the time it reaches the gauge it is a creek only in name. Limestone bedrock in the lower reaches gives it something the surrounding farm-country streams lack: real gravel and rock riffles, clean pools with structure, and the kind of habitat that holds smallmouth bass rather than merely tolerating them.

The gauge near Lafayette reports discharge and stage, and the useful reading is a moderate one. High water on this creek is genuinely dangerous, because the channel is confined and the rise comes quickly off tiled farmland, and boaters have come to grief on log jams in the upper reaches during spring floods. Low summer flow is easy paddling with occasional dragging through the shallowest riffles, and it is also when the creek fishes best on foot. The middle ground, a falling stage with clearing water, is the condition local anglers watch for.

Smallmouth bass are the headline fishery and the reason the creek has a following well beyond Tippecanoe County. They hold in the riffles, at the heads and tails of pools, and against every piece of woody cover the creek has. Rock bass are abundant and eager, longear sunfish add colour, and channel catfish work the deeper holes. Flathead catfish of serious size live in the lower reaches near the Wabash. Public access is better than average for an Indiana creek, with county parks and several formal canoe launches along the corridor.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Wildcat Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
