About the Sugar Creek

Sugar Creek runs about ninety miles across west central Indiana, from Tipton County down through Crawfordsville and past Shades and Turkey Run state parks before reaching the Wabash near Montezuma. The USGS gauge at Crawfordsville sits at the head of the section most people float and reports discharge and stage. There is no water temperature series here, so seasonal decisions are made on flow and air temperature. Below Crawfordsville the creek enters the sandstone gorge country that makes it the most heavily paddled stream in the state.

For anglers, Sugar Creek is a smallmouth bass stream first and foremost. The gravel riffles, bedrock ledges and undercut sandstone banks between Crawfordsville and Turkey Run hold a strong population of stream smallmouth along with rock bass, longear sunfish and the occasional spotted or largemouth bass in slower pools. Channel catfish work the deeper bends. Fish here run to stream sizes rather than reservoir sizes, and the appeal is numbers, scenery and the ease of covering water on foot.

Guided and outfitted trips are paddle trips. The canoe liveries around Crawfordsville and Turkey Run have run shuttle-supported floats for generations, and fishing-specific guides work the same water with kayaks and light canoes. Because the creek is shallow through most of its length, a typical day mixes floating between riffles with getting out and wading the shoals, which is how most of the smallmouth are actually caught. Motorized access is not practical anywhere on the fishable water.

Flow sets the season. Sugar Creek is entirely free-flowing and rises fast, and at high water the gorge section is a whitewater proposition rather than a fishing one. At the other extreme, midsummer low flow turns long stretches into a walk. The dependable window runs from May through early July and again in September. Indiana licenses are required, and the state regulations linked below carry current black bass sizes and creel limits, which are set statewide on this stream.

Seasons

Spring: high and pushy through April; the creek clears and the smallmouth turn on through May.
Summer: the main wading season, low and clear, best fished early and late with long walks between pools.
Fall: a strong second window in September as flows recover and water cools.
Winter: high or ice-affected, with little guided or livery activity.
