About the Rockcastle River

The Rockcastle drains the rough eastern Kentucky plateau and runs south through the Daniel Boone National Forest to meet the Cumberland. Below Billows it enters a gorge of boulder gardens and rock shelves that is genuinely remote for a river this close to Interstate 75, and the lower section is a well-known whitewater run as well as a fishery. The name is earned – the riverbed is a jumble of sandstone.

Smallmouth bass carry the fishery and the Rockcastle grows good ones, helped by the boulder structure that gives fish somewhere to sit in a river that otherwise moves fast. Rock bass are everywhere, spotted bass mix in through the lower reaches, and longear sunfish provide constant entertainment on light tackle. The upper river and the Middle Fork hold muskellunge, part of Kentucky’s stream muskie program, and they are the reason a certain kind of angler drives a long way to fish here in cold weather.

Floating is how most of the river gets fished. The upper reaches above the gorge make pleasant, easy canoe water and are the sensible choice for a fishing day. The lower gorge below Bee Rock is serious whitewater at anything but low flow, with rapids that demand real skill, and it should not be treated as a fishing float unless the water is low and the boater knows the run. Wading the upper river in late summer works well.

Access runs off the national forest road system, with Bee Rock, Livingston and the Kentucky 80 corridor serving as the main points. Much of the surrounding land is public, which makes bank access unusually good by Kentucky standards. Flows are rain-driven and swing hard, so check the gauge before committing to a float, and be aware that summer low water can leave long dragging stretches.
