About the Kalamazoo River
The lower Kalamazoo is a different river from the one that runs through the city upstream. Below the Allegan dam it widens, slows and winds west through the Allegan State Game Area, a large block of public land that keeps much of the corridor undeveloped, before reaching Lake Michigan at Saugatuck. The gauge at New Richmond sits in the middle of this reach, and it is unusually useful because it reports water temperature alongside discharge and stage. On a river whose fishing is governed by migratory runs, that temperature reading is often the single most informative number available.
Steelhead and salmon define the fishery. Chinook and coho push in from Lake Michigan from late summer through autumn, steelhead follow and run again in spring, and brown trout are present through the colder months. The Allegan dam marks the upstream limit for most of these fish, concentrating them in the reach below it. Outside the runs the lower river is a solid warmwater fishery, with smallmouth bass along the rockier edges, walleye, northern pike in the slower backwaters, channel catfish and a great many carp, which have become a target in their own right.
Access is better here than on most west Michigan rivers because of the Game Area, with walk-in bank fishing as well as ramps for drift boats and jet sleds. New Richmond is a traditional access point and gets busy during a strong run. Check both flow and temperature before travelling: a warm, low river in early autumn will hold fish in the cooler lower reaches near the lake, while a cool rain is often what triggers the push upstream that everyone is waiting for. Pressure concentrates hard at New Richmond during a strong push, so arriving early or working the quieter Game Area banks is usually the difference between a good day and a crowded one.

The photo at the top of this page is not Kalamazoo River.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
