About the Frenchman Creek

Frenchman Creek drains a large block of the southwest Nebraska tableland and reaches the Republican River at Culbertson, and it is a better fishery than its modest name suggests. A substantial share of its flow comes from groundwater discharge out of the High Plains aquifer rather than from surface runoff, which gives it a steadier baseflow and cooler summer temperatures than a prairie creek of this size would otherwise have. Enders Reservoir sits on it upstream, and releases from the dam moderate the flow further. The result is a creek that keeps fishing through August when others in the region are reduced to warm puddles.

The channel runs through cottonwood and willow bottom between cut banks, with gravel and sand riffles separating deeper pools. Channel catfish are the mainstay and reach a good size in the deeper holes, flatheads hold in the log jams, and both largemouth and smallmouth bass use the rock and woody cover. Walleye, sauger and northern pike drop down out of Enders and are caught with some regularity in the upper reach, which gives the creek an unusual species list for its size. Rock bass and green sunfish fill in everywhere, and the carp are large enough to be worth targeting deliberately.

The gauge at Culbertson reports both discharge and stage, so this water can be read properly before a trip. Flow is the useful number: moderate discharge gives wadeable riffles and fishable pools, while irrigation-season withdrawal upstream can pull the creek down sharply in mid-summer and a thunderstorm on the tableland can spike it brown within hours. Much of the bank is private ranch and farm ground, so access runs through bridge crossings, the reservoir above and the Republican River below, and asking permission is the normal courtesy.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Frenchman Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. 5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
