About the Sluice Creek

Sluice Creek is part of the Dennis Creek marsh system in Cape May County, one of the large blocks of undeveloped salt marsh on the Delaware Bay side of southern New Jersey. The gauge sits at South Dennis, a few miles up from the bay, in water that is fully tidal but narrow and winding, bordered by spartina and threaded with smaller guts and ditches. It is back-bay fishing in the proper sense: shallow, structureless to the eye, and entirely dependent on reading tide and bait rather than finding obvious cover. The surrounding marsh is protected state land, which is why the system still fishes as well as it does.

Striped bass are the backbone of the fishery and are present from early spring through late autumn, holding in the deeper bends and at the mouths of the feeder guts and feeding most aggressively on a dropping tide as the marsh drains. Summer flounder move up the creek on the flood and sit on the harder bottom near the channel edges. Weakfish are the traditional Delaware Bay fish here and still show in numbers in good years. Bluefish push through in the warmer months, black drum move into the bay nearby in a well-known late-spring run, and Atlantic croaker and northern kingfish fill in around the rest. Blue crabbing is excellent and is what most families on this creek are actually doing.

The gauge reports tidal water level only, with no temperature or discharge series, and on a marsh creek that is the number that matters most. It gives you the real stage and range rather than a predicted one, which is useful on Delaware Bay where a sustained south-west wind will push water in and hold it. The practical rule here is to fish the drain: the first three hours of the ebb, when everything the marsh holds is being flushed into the creek channel.

The photo at the top of this page is not Sluice Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.

Access

South Dennis - the gauge village and the nearest launch on the creek itself.
Dennis Creek - the main stem below the gauge, with a state ramp giving access to the bay.
Delaware Bay mouth - the downstream end, where the creek meets open bay and the flounder sit.
Eldora - the small settlement on the marsh edge, closest to the lower creek.
Cape May Court House - the regional town for lodging, tackle and food, fifteen minutes east.
Maurice River - the larger Delaware Bay estuary north, a natural alternative on windy days.
Cape May Canal - the deeper-water option south when the back bays are too warm or too low.

Seasons

Spring: striped bass arrive early and the black drum run in the adjacent bay is the regional event of the season.
Summer: flounder and weakfish in the creek, blue crabbing at its best and bass holding in the deeper bends.
Fall: the strongest months, as bait leaves the marsh and striped bass and bluefish feed hard on the ebb.
Winter: effectively closed, with the creek too cold and the fish gone to the deeper bay channels.
