About the Shrewsbury River
The Shrewsbury is a tidal river in name and an estuary in behavior. It runs behind the barrier beach at Sea Bright, joins the Navesink at Rumson and empties through the Sandy Hook Channel into Raritan Bay and the ocean beyond. There is no meaningful freshwater flow to speak of; what moves the water here is the tide, and the whole fishery organises itself around which way it is running. On a clear day the Manhattan skyline is visible from the boat, which makes this one of the most improbable pieces of productive fishing water on the East Coast.
Striped bass are the reason most people come, and the Shrewsbury holds them for an unusually long season. Spring brings fish moving in off the ocean, summer holds resident schoolies and a strong night bite around the bridge lights at Sea Bright and Oceanic, and the fall run through October and November can be excellent. Bluefish push in behind the bunker schools, summer flounder work the sand edges and channel drops, and weakfish show in the deeper holes in a good year. Tautog hold on the bridge pilings and rock, and blue crabbing in the back coves is a serious local pursuit in its own right. Light-tackle guides run the river hard in both directions of the tide.
The gauge at Sea Bright publishes tidal elevation rather than discharge, which is exactly the right number for this water. Read it for the stage and the direction of the tide, plan the trip around moving water rather than slack, and remember that a hard onshore blow will push and dirty the whole system.
