About the West Branch Croton River

The West Branch of the Croton River is a modest piece of water with an outsized reputation, and the reason is proximity. It runs through the Putnam County reservoir system that supplies New York City, and the reach below the West Branch Reservoir dam near Kent Cliffs is a genuine tailwater: a bottom release that keeps the water cold enough to hold trout through a Hudson Valley summer, within about an hour’s drive of eight million people. The Croton system as a whole has been fished since the nineteenth century and the West Branch is one of the more consistent pieces of it.

Brown trout are the mainstay, a mix of stocked fish and wild recruitment, holding in the pocket water and the deeper pools and growing well on an insect base that is richer than the stream’s size suggests. Rainbow trout are present in the stocked reaches, brook trout show in the colder feeder water, and smallmouth bass and rock bass occupy the warmer lower reaches as the river approaches the next reservoir in the chain. The water is small enough to be a wading and short-cast fishery throughout, and because it holds fish within reach of the city it rewards anglers who come on a weekday morning rather than a Saturday afternoon.

Access is the thing to get right before travelling. Much of the Croton watershed is New York City Department of Environmental Protection land, and fishing it legally requires a DEP access permit in addition to a state licence. That permit is free and straightforward to obtain, but it is not optional and the rules about where boats, wading and bank fishing are allowed vary by reach. The gauge reports discharge and stage but no temperature, so the release is the number to read: a steady moderate flow is the sweet spot, while a heavy release scours the pocket water and a very low one warms the reach and pushes trout into the few deep holds. Spring and autumn are best.

The photo at the top of this page is not West Branch Croton River.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for.
