About the Jordan Creek
Jordan Creek rises against the Blue Mountain in northern Lehigh County and runs roughly thirty miles southeast across the Lehigh Valley before joining the Little Lehigh River at Allentown. Along the way it crosses from the sandstone and shale of the ridge into the carbonate rock that defines the valley floor, and the change in water chemistry is what makes the stream interesting to anglers.
The upper creek above Schnecksville is a freestone stream in character, cool and quick, holding wild brown trout in the better sections. Through the middle valley it picks up limestone springs and takes on the steadier flows and richer insect life associated with that geology. The gauge at Allentown reads the lower end, where the creek drains about seventy-six square miles.
Brown trout are the main fishery, wild in the upper reaches and stocked more heavily lower down. Rainbow trout are stocked seasonally and brook trout persist in a few headwater tributaries. Toward the mouth the creek warms and smallmouth bass and rock bass become part of the picture, along with the white suckers that are abundant throughout.
Access along the lower creek is exceptionally good by Pennsylvania standards. The Jordan Creek Greenway and the Ironton Rail Trail follow long stretches, and Trexler Nature Preserve and Covered Bridge Park both put parking within a short walk of the water. Upstream the creek runs largely through private farmland, so permission or posted public access matters.
This is an urban-fringe stream and it shows it in places, with storm runoff affecting clarity quickly. It also means a genuinely good trout stream sits inside a metropolitan area of several hundred thousand people, which is not a common thing in eastern Pennsylvania.
