About the Patoka Lake
Patoka is the second largest reservoir in Indiana, set in the hill country of the southern part of the state between French Lick and Jasper. Like Monroe it is surrounded largely by public land, and its long branching arms give it far more shoreline than its surface area suggests.
The bass fishing is the mainstay, built around wood cover, rock points and the extensive shallow arms. The state stocks hybrid striped bass, and they provide the open-water fishery that gives the lake its second character: schooling fish chasing shad on the main lake, best found by watching for surface activity and birds rather than by grinding structure.
Crappie fishing around brush and standing timber is dependable through most of the year, and the bluegill fishing in the shallow arms in early summer is genuinely excellent.
Patoka has a large protected area managed for wildlife, including nesting bald eagles, and parts of the lake are restricted seasonally. It is worth checking current rules if you plan to explore the upper arms in spring.
The lake also has a reputation for producing good fish rather than many, which suits anglers who would rather work a stretch of timber properly than run twenty miles a day. That character is partly the water and partly the fact that Patoka takes less pressure than Monroe despite being nearly as good.

Patoka runs the usual flood-control pattern of a winter drawdown and a spring refill, and the swing is enough to take the shallow wood cover in the arms entirely out of the water.
