About the Geneva Lake
Geneva Lake is an anomaly. It sits in the rolling farm country of southeastern Wisconsin, ninety minutes from downtown Chicago, and it is more than one hundred and thirty feet deep with water clear enough to see structure at twenty. Glacial in origin and fed largely by springs, it is cold, oligotrophic and biologically closer to a northern Wisconsin lake than to anything else in its own corner of the state. That is why it supports a lake trout fishery at a latitude where lake trout have no business being.
For guided fishing the lake offers two distinct programs. The deep-water program targets lake trout, usually by trolling or by vertical jigging over the main basin, and it fishes best in the cold months at either end of the season. The structure program targets smallmouth bass, and this is the fishery that most anglers underrate. The clear water and hard bottom produce excellent numbers of smallmouth on the rock points, gravel shelves and drop-offs that ring the lake, and sight fishing is genuinely possible on calm days.
The complication is the shoreline. Geneva Lake has been a resort destination since the nineteenth century, the shore is almost entirely private, and summer weekends bring extremely heavy recreational traffic. The famous shore path circles the lake on foot but does not open the water to bank fishing. Serious guided trips here run early, run late, or run in the shoulder seasons when the pleasure boats are put away and the fish spread out. Public access is limited to a small number of ramps, and knowing which one to use for a given wind is part of what a local guide is being paid for.
