Trout On The Fly

These are walk and wade days inside the park, a full day measured as eight hours from the entrance gate, one guide to no more than two anglers. A majority of the Firehole is easily accessed because it parallels the Grand Loop Road, its geyser tributaries adding both volume and heat until summer pushes trout into cooler water such as Sentinel Creek; fish run five to twelve inches with the occasional larger one, and sixteen to twenty four inch fish show below Firehole Falls in October and November. The Gibbon drops from Grebe Lake through Wolf Lake, Virginia Cascades, Norris Meadows, Elk Park and the meadows above Gibbon Falls, small and friendly up top in June and holding sixteen to twenty inch fish below the falls from late September. Lamar trips carry a two day minimum, with access ranging from a five minute walk to a five mile hike, best from late July through September.
