About the Honey Creek
Honey Creek runs through the Arbuckle Mountains of south central Oklahoma and drops over Turner Falls, a limestone cascade that is among the most photographed natural features in the state. The gauge sits below the falls near Davis. This is not the sort of water most people picture when they think of Oklahoma fishing, and that contrast is much of its appeal, because the creek looks far more like an Ozark stream than a southern plains one.
The Arbuckles are ancient, worn down hills of limestone and dolomite, and the springs that emerge from that rock are what make Honey Creek what it is. Spring inflow keeps the creek clearer and cooler than the prairie streams around it, and the limestone bed gives the water a green tint and supports a level of aquatic life that the surrounding region cannot match. The creek runs over bedrock ledges, through travertine pools and between wooded bluffs.
Because the water stays comparatively cool, Oklahoma manages a seasonal trout fishery here, stocking rainbow trout during the colder months when temperatures allow. That is a put and take fishery rather than a wild one, and it draws real crowds while it lasts. Outside the trout season the creek fishes for its resident species: largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, bluegill, longear sunfish, channel catfish and rock bass in the deeper pools, which hold fish year round and fish best where the bedrock ledges create depth.
Access is largely through Turner Falls Park, operated by the city of Davis, which charges admission and is a busy recreation destination in summer. Anglers should expect swimmers and families through the warm months and plan accordingly.
Interstate 35 runs close by, which makes this one of the easier stops to reach in the state, and it pairs naturally with a visit to the spring-fed water at Chickasaw National Recreation Area just to the south.

The photo at the top of this page is not Honey Creek.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
