About the Porter Bayou

Porter Bayou runs through the middle of the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta in Sunflower County, one of the flattest and most intensively farmed landscapes in North America. The gauge at Stephensville is unusually well equipped for a small bayou, carrying discharge and stage alongside a suite of water-quality sensors, a reflection of how closely this drainage has been studied for agricultural runoff. For an angler the practical value is the flow and stage record, which tells you whether the bayou is fishable before you make the drive.

This is classic Delta water. Gradient is negligible, the bottom is silt, and the bayou is turbid nearly always. It rises quickly after rain and carries field sediment when it does. Depth is modest, and the fish relate to whatever breaks the uniformity: the outside of bends, culverts and bridge crossings, fallen willow, and the junctions where field ditches enter. In a landscape this featureless those small changes are the whole game, and local knowledge counts for a great deal.

White crappie are the headline fish and the spring run draws what pressure this bayou sees. Catfish are abundant, with channel, blue and flathead catfish all present and the flatheads reaching serious weight in the deeper holes. Largemouth bass hold on the wood, bluegill and warmouth are everywhere, and bowfin, spotted gar, freshwater drum and carp are common. Nothing here is delicate; this is a warm, fertile, productive system. The bayou is fertile enough that numbers are rarely the problem; finding water that is neither blown out nor stagnant is the whole challenge.

Access is from road crossings rather than developed ramps, and the surrounding land is private farm ground, so a small boat launched at a bridge is the usual approach. Ask before crossing fields.

The photo at the top of this page is not Porter Bayou.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

Access

Indianola - the nearest town of size, with fuel, food, lodging and tackle.
Stephensville - the gauge location and a practical reference point for access.
Bridge and road crossings - the standard launch points for a small boat or a bank session.
Sunflower River - the larger drainage this system belongs to, close by.
Greenville - a Mississippi River city to the west with services and river access.
Lake Washington - a noted oxbow fishery within reasonable driving distance.
Moon Lake - another Delta oxbow, a good alternative when the bayou is high and dirty.

Seasons

Spring: the white crappie run is the reason to be here, with fish on the wood and at the bridge crossings.
Summer: catfish dominate, worked slowly in the deeper bends, and bass hold tight to shade through the heat.
Fall: cooling water improves bass fishing on the wood and crappie show again in smaller numbers.
Winter: low water concentrates everything into the few deep holes, and catfish remain catchable when little else is.
