About the Bluewater Lake
Bluewater Lake sits at about seventy-four hundred feet in the high country below the Zuni Mountains of western New Mexico, impounded on Bluewater Creek and surrounded by a state park that gives it some of the best public access of any water in that part of the state. It drains roughly two hundred square miles of high desert and forest, and the gauge reads lake elevation and storage rather than flow, which is the right pair of numbers for a water whose fishing is governed almost entirely by how full it is.
That variability is the first thing to understand. Bluewater has drawn down severely in dry years and filled again in wet ones, and the fishery has been rebuilt more than once as a result. When the lake is high it is genuinely good water, with flooded shoreline vegetation and a productive shallow end. When it is low the fish concentrate and the fishing can be excellent for a while before conditions get hard. Checking the storage figure before committing to the drive is not optional here.
Rainbow trout carry the everyday fishery and are stocked to support it, with cutthroat trout also present. The water the lake is best known for, though, is its predator management: Bluewater is one of the few New Mexico lakes managed for trophy tiger muskie, a sterile hybrid stocked to control rough fish and now a genuine draw in its own right. Special length limits apply to them and anglers should read the rules before going. Channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and carp fill out the assemblage.
Access is from the state park, with a boat ramp, campground and shoreline that is walkable over much of the lake. Winter ice fishing happens in colder years.

The photo at the top of this page is not Bluewater Lake.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
