About the Kishacoquillas Creek

Kishacoquillas Creek, known universally as the Kish, runs down the valley of the same name in Mifflin County and enters the Juniata River at Lewistown. It is a limestone spring creek, and it belongs to the family of central Pennsylvania waters that made the region’s reputation among trout anglers, alongside the better-known Spring Creek and Penns Creek nearby.

What defines a limestoner is the water source. The creek is fed by springs rising through limestone geology rather than by surface runoff, which gives it three properties an angler cares about. It stays cold through July and August when freestone streams nearby are too warm to fish responsibly. It is alkaline and rich, so it grows a heavy insect population and fish that put on weight quickly. And it is far more stable than a rain-fed stream, rising and clearing faster after a storm. The gauge at Reedsville reports stage and discharge, and because the baseflow is spring-driven the numbers sit in a relatively narrow band, so a spike is a clear and readable signal.

Wild brown trout are the main attraction and the fish most anglers come for, holding in the undercut banks, weed beds and riffle seams that limestone creeks produce. Stocked rainbows and browns supplement the population in the accessible reaches, and brook trout appear in the colder headwater tributaries. The lower creek toward the Juniata warms and turns over to smallmouth bass and rock bass, which is a decent fishery in its own right in the summer.

The valley is farmland and much of the creek runs through private ground, so respecting posted land and seeking permission matters here more than on most waters. Pennsylvania has special-regulation sections on many limestone creeks, so check the current book for the reach you intend to fish.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Kishacoquillas Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. The license lasts until you withdraw it (section 4).

You keep the copyright. The license is not exclusive, so you can use the photo anywhere else and license it to anyone else. We will not sell your photo, license it on to anyone else on its own, or use it in paid advertising for a third party.
