About the East Fork Carson River
The East Fork of the Carson comes off the Sierra crest in California, runs north through a roadless canyon, and comes out into the Carson Valley at Gardnerville with the mountains standing straight up behind it. The canyon float from Hangmans Bridge to Ruhenstroth is one of the best short wilderness trips in the West, twenty miles of class II water with hot springs bubbling out on the bank partway down, run as an overnight by rafters and as a long day by anglers.
The trout are wild brown and rainbow trout, and the canyon fish see very few flies. Dry-dropper fishing works most of the summer and streamers move the better browns. Below the canyon the river slows through the ranch meadows of the Carson Valley, where access is a patchwork of public easements and private ground and the fishing turns technical in the clear, slow water. Winter brings a stocked fishery in the valley reaches.
The Gardnerville gauge governs the float. Roughly 250 to 800 cfs is the comfortable range for the canyon trip; above a thousand the class II water gets pushy and the hot springs go underwater, and below about 200 the rafts start dragging and the day gets long. Snowmelt drives the whole calendar, so the window is generally May into July in a normal year and much shorter in a dry one.
Gardnerville and Minden are the base towns, with Carson City twenty minutes north and South Lake Tahoe over the hill. Permits and shuttle logistics for the canyon are worth arranging through a local outfitter the first time.
