About the Truckee River

The Truckee leaves Lake Tahoe at Tahoe City, runs east through California and into Nevada, and ends in Pyramid Lake with no outlet to the sea. That closed basin is why the river matters biologically: it is the migration corridor for Lahontan cutthroat trout, the largest inland trout in North America, whose restoration has been one of the great fisheries stories of the last two decades. It is also, more prosaically, a very good brown trout river running through the middle of Reno.

The Nevada reaches from the state line through Verdi, Reno and Sparks and on toward Wadsworth hold wild brown trout that grow large on a rich food base, with rainbows mixed in. The urban water through Reno fishes better than it looks, especially early and late in the day, and the reaches below Sparks are big, boulder-strewn and lightly fished. Below Derby Dam the river becomes the cutthroat corridor toward Pyramid, managed under separate rules and tribal jurisdiction.

The Reno gauge is the reference for the middle river. Readings around 200 to 800 cfs give comfortable wading and defined holding water. Spring runoff out of the Sierra can push it into the thousands and make the river unwadeable; late-summer and drought-year lows drop it into the low hundreds or less, when water temperature becomes the limiting factor and anglers should fish early and higher in the system.

Reno and Sparks put the whole river within city limits for a stretch, with Verdi upstream and Tahoe forty minutes away. Below Wadsworth the river crosses the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, where a tribal permit is required.

Verdi and the California state line: upper Nevada access and canyon water.
Mayberry Park and Idlewild Park, Reno: city park access with parking and trails.
Downtown Reno and the Truckee River Walk: urban access and surprisingly good pocket water.
Sparks and Rock Park: lower urban access with easy wading.
Lockwood and Mustang: canyon reaches below the cities, lightly fished.
Derby Dam and below: the Lahontan cutthroat corridor, separate rules.
Pyramid Lake and the reservation: tribal permit required.

Seasons

Year-round on most of the Nevada river.
March through May: pre-runoff fishing, then high Sierra melt.
June through September: the main season; fish early on hot weeks and watch water temperature.
October through February: brown trout in the fall, then quiet winter fishing through the city reaches.
