About the Melvern Lake
Melvern Lake impounds the Marais des Cygnes River in Osage County, southwest of Topeka, and covers roughly seven thousand acres of open east-central Kansas water. It is less convoluted than some of the state’s creek-arm reservoirs, which makes it a windier and more exposed lake to fish but also a better one for the species that use open water. Walleye are the signature fish and the reason a good share of anglers make the drive: the lake is stocked and managed for them, and they are taken trolling and drifting along points, flats and the main-lake structure through most of the open-water season.
Crappie fill in as the volume fishery, concentrated around brush piles and standing structure, and white bass and wiper provide the summer schooling action that makes an evening on the lake worthwhile when nothing else is happening. Channel and blue catfish are both well established and are fished heavily from the bank as well as from boats. Largemouth bass are present without being the lake’s main identity, holding on riprap, points and whatever timber remains in the upper end where the river comes in.
Eisenhower State Park sits on the western shore and provides the bulk of the developed access, with camping, ramps and shoreline that gets used year round. The USGS gauge near Melvern reports lake elevation alongside water quality readings, and the elevation trace is the practical planning number. Kansas reservoirs in this part of the state swing meaningfully between a filled spring pool and a drawn-down late summer, and that swing affects which ramps are usable and how far the fishable flats extend. Wind is the other constant: on open water this size, a windy forecast is often the deciding factor in whether a trip happens at all.

The photo at the top of this page is not Melvern Lake.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

Seasons
Spring: walleye move shallow and the crappie fishing peaks, which together make this the busiest and most productive season.
Summer: open-water trolling for walleye and wiper, with wind dictating what is fishable more than anything else.
Fall: shad concentrate and predators follow, and cooling water brings fish back within reach of shoreline anglers.
Winter: lightly fished and often drawn down, with crappie holding deep and catfish still taken from the bank on mild days.
