About the Wilson Lake

Wilson Lake is the clearest large reservoir in Kansas and, for many anglers, the most attractive. It sits in the Smoky Hills west of Salina, ringed by sandstone bluffs and native prairie rather than by trees or houses, and the water is clear enough that it looks like nowhere else in the state.

Striped bass are the signature fish. Unlike the hybrid wipers stocked in most Kansas lakes, Wilson holds true stripers, and they grow large on the shad forage base. Chasing them on open water is the reason many anglers make the drive. The clear water and the rock also support the best smallmouth bass fishing in Kansas, on the bluff ends, the riprap and the rocky points.

Walleye are present and well regarded, white bass provide fast fishing when they school, and the crappie fishing around brush and rock is dependable. Channel catfish are abundant and easy to catch from the bank.

Because the lake is clear and largely treeless, wind and light both matter more than on a stained reservoir. Bright still days push fish deep and make them difficult; a good chop on the rock is often the difference between a slow morning and a fast one.

Wilson is also a genuinely good place to spend a couple of days rather than a morning. The state park has cabins, the surrounding country is open prairie and sandstone, and there is very little else competing for your attention. Anglers who come from eastern Kansas tend to make it a trip rather than a day.

Access

Wilson State Park: ramps, camping and cabins on the north shore.

Dam area: deep water and bank access.
Lucas Park: additional ramp and camping.
Open prairie shoreline gives extensive walk-in bank access.

Seasons

Winter: deep, clear and quiet, with stripers holding on structure.
Spring: the best all-round fishing, smallmouth on the rock and stripers moving.
Summer: stripers on open water at dawn, smallmouth deep, hot and bright by midday.
Fall: schooling stripers and white bass, and the most enjoyable fishing of the year.
