About the Lake Arrowhead

Lake Arrowhead is one of the more visually distinctive reservoirs in north-central Texas, and the thing that makes it distinctive is also what makes it fish well. When the Little Wichita River was impounded south-east of Wichita Falls the timber was left standing across large parts of the basin, and the result is square miles of flooded trunks and stumps rising out of open water. That structure holds fish, breaks the relentless prairie wind into fishable pockets, and gives anglers something to work that is not simply a bare clay bank. Lake Arrowhead State Park occupies the southern shore and provides the main public access, camping and launches.

Largemouth bass work the timber edges and the shoreline brush and are the main target for visiting anglers, with the best fishing concentrated where the standing trunks meet a drop into the old river channel. Catfish are arguably the stronger fishery: channel and blue catfish are abundant and run to good weights, and flathead catfish hold in the heaviest timber and account for the largest fish taken here most years. White bass school in open water and can be found pushing bait on calm mornings, hybrid striped bass are present and give the lake a heavier open-water option, and white crappie stack tightly on the submerged trunks. Bluegill fill out the shallows and are the obvious live bait.

The gauge here reports reservoir elevation rather than a flow series, which is the right number for a still water of this kind. Lake level is the thing to check before a trip: this is a shallow prairie reservoir in a part of Texas that swings between drought and flood, and the level determines whether the timber is standing in fishable depth or in inches of water. A falling trace through a dry summer pulls fish off the flats and onto the channel edges.

The photo at the top of this page is not Lake Arrowhead.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
