About the James River
The James River starts east of Springfield and loops south and west around the city before running through Galena to Table Rock Lake. It is a designated smallmouth management stream and one of the better bass floats within an hour of Springfield and Branson, which makes it a good first Ozark river for anglers who want a guide without a long drive.
The float water begins around Springfield’s southeast side and improves steadily downstream. Delaware Town, Hootentown, Shelvin Rock, and Kerr are the accesses guides use most, with Hootentown to Galena the classic full-day smallmouth float. The river alternates long slow pools with short gravel riffles, and the pools hold smallmouth, largemouth, spotted bass, and goggle-eye. The water is not as cold or clear as the spring rivers to the east, so it fishes well on cloudy days and in low light.
The Galena gauge reads at the bottom of the float section, just above Table Rock Lake. Around 150 to 400 cfs is a normal floating flow; under 100 the riffles are thin and the pools are slow paddling; above 800 the river is stained and rising and most guides reschedule. The James responds to rain over Springfield quickly.
Galena and Crane are the small towns near the takeouts; Springfield and Branson supply everything else. Because the lower river backs up into Table Rock Lake, the last miles above Galena can be slack water when the lake is high, and guides will sometimes shorten the float to Shelvin Rock or Kerr to stay in moving water. The James is also the easiest river in this list to fish for a few hours after work, which is why so many Springfield anglers learn to read Ozark water here first.
