About the Osage Creek

Osage Creek drains roughly thirty-five square miles of Benton County before joining the Illinois River, and it runs through some of the most thoroughly karst country in Arkansas. Cave Springs, the community the gauge is named for, sits on a cave system that discharges into the creek, and that groundwater is what gives Osage Creek its clarity, its steady summer flow and its cool temperature relative to the surrounding land. It is a spring creek in the working sense of the term rather than merely a creek with springs somewhere in its headwaters.

The bed is chert gravel over limestone, arranged in the classic Ozark sequence of shallow riffle, short run and deeper pool against a bluff or an undercut bank. Water clarity is often exceptional, which makes for genuinely good sight fishing and equally good reasons to approach carefully. The creek is small enough to wade comfortably in most conditions and it responds fast to rain, colouring up within hours and clearing again within a day or two.

Smallmouth bass are the headline fish and the ones most anglers come for. Ozark bass, a species found only in this corner of the country, share the same rocky water and are worth recognising rather than mistaking for rock bass, which are also present. Spotted and largemouth bass use the slower pools, longear sunfish and green sunfish are abundant, and channel catfish hold in the deeper holes. It is a varied assemblage for a creek this size.

Access is from road crossings and from public rights of way, with a good deal of private ground in between, and the creek runs through country that has urbanised quickly, so water quality varies with the reach. Wading upstream is the way to fish it.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Osage Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. Access

Cave Springs - the small town at the springs, the nearest point of reference for the gauge reach.
Rogers - a full service city minutes east with tackle, lodging and guides.
Bentonville - the regional centre to the north, with every service a visiting angler needs.
Road crossings between Cave Springs and Rogers - the practical wading access.
Illinois River - the larger float stream this creek feeds, a short drive west.
War Eagle Creek - a neighbouring Ozark smallmouth creek and a good alternative when levels are wrong.
Beaver Lake - the large regional reservoir nearby, a complete change of fishing in poor creek conditions.

Seasons

Spring: high clear water and active smallmouth make this the best fishing of the year, though rain can colour the creek quickly.
Summer: spring flow holds the creek up through the heat and early mornings fish well in low clear water.
Fall: cooling temperatures push smallmouth and Ozark bass onto a hard feed and the water is usually at its clearest.
Winter: fish stack in the deep bluff pools, the fishing is slow and deliberate, and the creek is effectively empty of anglers.
